Teachings of Lord Chaitanya

$8.00

Lord Chaitanya Mahāprabhu is Kṛṣṇa Himself. He appeared in Māyāpur, India, February 18, 1486, in part, to teach by example the method of practicing pure devotional service to the Supreme Personality of Godhead. His birth was marked by tumultuous chanting of the Holy Names. It was a lunar eclipse, and the populace was engaged in bathing in the Ganges for purification, while loudly invoking the names of the Lord. This was the perfect setting for the appearance of Lord Chaitanya, as one of His purposes in coming to this Earthly realm was to establish Harināma Saṅkīrtan, or the widespread public chanting of the Holy Names.

This book gives a brief synopsis of the life of Lord Chaitanya Mahāprabhu and His mission. It goes into detail about His instructions to, and conversations with, some of His most intimate personal associates, whose glowing qualities offer us perfect examples of devotional behavior. This literature addresses and corrects various philosophical misunderstandings, most importantly, the Māyāvādi doctrine of Impersonalism, in which there is a belief that after liberation, one loses all identity, there is a blanket “oneness,” that this world is false, and that the Supreme Lord is a formless “non-person.” Lord Chaitanya reveals that there is a simultaneous oneness and difference between the Lord and the individual soul, which allows for rich personal exchanges between the Lord and His devotee.

The teachings of Lord Chaitanya presented by His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda in this book and the teachings of Lord Śrī Kṛṣṇa in the Bhagavad-Gītā are non-different, but Lord Chaitanya demonstrated the practical application of the teachings of the Bhagavad-Gītā. Whereas the conclusion of Bhagavad-Gītā is to surrender fully to the Supreme Personality of Godhead, which is the perfection of life and awards transcendental peace, freedom from all types of fear, the direct shelter of the Lord, and entry into the Eternal Abode, the life example of Lord Chaitanya Mahāprabhu begins with this surrender and takes us deeper into devotional mellows.

Lord Chaitanya instructed His disciples to write books on the Science of Kṛṣṇa for the benefit of all humanity. His desire has been carried out through the centuries by a lineage of pure and devout followers, and this book is duly presented by Śrīla Prabhupāda, a bonafide Acharya in the Vaiṣṇava, or devotional, disciplic succession that originates with the Lord Himself.
